The update years of a phone count from the manufacturer’s calendar, not from the date you buy the refurbished device. To know how much remains, identify the exact model, check the official commitment and compare the end date with the period you intend to use it.

The information below was consulted on 10 October 2026. Distinguish published commitments from editorial calculations and avoid assigning an end date to models for which we have not confirmed it.
System and security versions are different commitments
An Android or iOS update can bring new features. A security update fixes vulnerabilities and may arrive without a new major version. Receiving one does not automatically mean receiving all features of the other.
Applications have their own requirements. A phone may continue to power on and make calls when a banking or work app already requires a newer version. Before buying, check the applications you depend on.
Google Pixel: timeline and remaining time
The Google indicates 7 years of system and security updates for Pixel 8 and later and 5 years for Pixel 6, Pixel 7, variants of those families and Pixel Fold. The count starts when each model became available on the US Google Store.
| Model | First availability | Calculated end of commitment | Approximate time from October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 7 and 7 Pro | October 2022 | October 2027 | 1 year |
| Pixel 7a | May 2023 | May 2028 | 1 year and 7 months |
| Pixel 8 and 8 Pro | October 2023 | October 2030 | 4 years |
| Pixel 8a | May 2024 | May 2031 | 4 years and 7 months |
| Pixel 9 | August 2024 | August 2031 | 4 years and 10 months |
The launch months come from the official availability list. The end dates and remaining time are month-based calculations from the announced commitment. They are not an additional promise from iOutlet nor an indication of the delivery day of each update.
Samsung: check the commitment for the concrete generation
For the Galaxy S24 family, Samsung announced 7 generations of system updates and 7 years of security. For Galaxy A56 5G, A36 5G and A26 5G, the official communication indicates up to 6 generations of system and 6 years of security.
Do not apply these commitments to all Samsung devices. A Galaxy A from an earlier generation or a different variant may have another timeline. To confirm which receive updates and with what frequency, consult the current security scope of Samsung. Presence on this list does not, by itself, provide an individual end date.
A quarterly cadence does not necessarily mean abandonment. The manufacturer may change the frequency over the model’s lifetime. Also confirm market, variant and carrier, because distribution may vary.
iPhone: current compatibility is not a promised end date
For iPhone, check compatibility with the desired version and the Apple security update logs. These logs show versions and devices covered, but do not allow guaranteeing how many additional years each iPhone will have.
This guide does not assign a universal end year to iPhones. A prediction based on history must be identified as an estimate, not presented as a manufacturer commitment. Also do not assume that receiving a fix for an earlier version equals full coverage of the latest version.
If you want to compare Apple models, use the refurbished iPhone guide together with official support sources.
How to calculate the useful timeline for your purchase
- Identify the exact model, including variant and generation.
- Look for the official end date or the duration and start of the count.
- If you need to calculate the date, identify it as a calculation.
- Compare the remaining time with your planned use.
- Check the requirements of essential applications.
- Also confirm storage, battery description and condition.
If you intend to keep the phone for three years, a model with about one year of commitment remaining deserves attention, even if it works well today. The decision depends on use and the risk you accept, but must be made with this information in view.
Refurbishment and warranty do not restart support
The refurbishment process does not alter the manufacturer’s update calendar. The purchase warranty is also a separate matter from software support. Read both separately.
Compare the refurbished phones available as a whole: known support time, applications, configuration and current price. A low price is only advantageous if the equipment serves for the intended period.
Frequently asked questions
Does a phone stop working at the end of support?
Not necessarily. The end of updates changes protection and may affect compatibility over time. It is not an automatic failure date.
Does buying today give me the full announced timeline?
No, unless the manufacturer expressly defines that count. Check the starting point of the commitment.
Does a new version guarantee all features?
No. Some features depend on hardware, country, language or application. Confirm those that are essential for you.
