What is a refurbished smartphone in 2026

A refurbished smartphone is a device that was used, returned or traded in, and has gone through a professional testing process before being put back on the market. At iOutlet, each unit is diagnosed at more than 30 points, the battery is evaluated with specialised technical software and the device is certified by visual grade.

The difference between refurbished and second-hand is straightforward: a refurbished phone comes with warranty, documented tests and a company that backs it. A second-hand phone bought from a private seller has none of that.

Prices for refurbished smartphones sit 30% to 60% below the equivalent new device. The difference comes from the refurbishment process, not from component quality.

How we refurbish each smartphone

Before any phone enters the iOutlet stock it goes through 7 mandatory stages. The process is run by our certified European refurbishment network. Average duration is 4 to 7 working days per device.

  1. Collection and initial sorting. Sourced from trade-ins, returns and surplus stock from European carriers. Each unit gets an internal ID before any handling.
  2. 30-point technical diagnostic. Screen, touch, front and rear cameras, microphone, speaker, sensors, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery and capacity — checked with PhoneCheck software and dedicated test benches.
  3. Repair or scrap. Faulty parts are replaced with original or equivalent OEM components. Units with damaged motherboards are recycled.
  4. Certified data erasure. Blancco wipe at DoD 5220.22-M level, with a report per unit. Activation Lock removed. SIM ejected.
  5. Original software installed. Current iOS or Android version for the model, without modified firmware or third-party apps.
  6. Visual grade classification. Grade A with no visible marks, Grade B with minimal marks visible from 30 cm, Grade C with visible marks. All three grades deliver the same technical performance.
  7. Packaging and delivery to iOutlet. Neutral box with a compatible USB-C or Lightning cable and a quick guide. No earbuds (EU 2022 directive).

We are producing a video of the lab process. It will be available on this page when ready.

  1. 24-month warranty. Above the legal minimum for refurbished devices and above what most marketplaces offer. The warranty covers hardware defects at no cost to the customer.
  2. European company based in Coimbra, Portugal. English and Portuguese support by email. EU invoice with VAT number, valid for business customers across the EU.
  3. Real stock of more than 6,000 phones, with documented IMEI per unit. No ghost listings, no invisible dropshipping.

  5. Interest-free instalments with Klarna (3×) and Floa Bank (4×), plus card and bank transfer. Instant approval with no deposit.

Checklist for choosing where to buy

Use these criteria before you decide, on any website:

  • How many months of warranty are offered? (Legal minimum for refurbished phones varies by EU country, from 1 year upwards.)
  • Does the company have an EU address and respond in your language?
  • Is the testing process publicly documented?
  • Can you pay in interest-free instalments?
  • Do you have 14 days to return without justification?
  • Does the price refer to the same grade (A, B or C) that other sites show?

Best refurbished smartphone by budget

Up to €150 — affordable smartphones that work well

The iPhone 11 (€81) is the cheapest smartphone with Face ID and a dual camera. For Android, the Galaxy A14 (€129) or Galaxy A53 (€142) offer large screens and generous batteries for under €150.

€150 to €300 — the sweet spot

This is where the best deals sit: iPhone 12 (€181) with 5G and OLED, iPhone 13 (€239) with Cinematic camera, or Galaxy S22 (€155) — last year's flagship at entry-level price. The Galaxy Z Flip (€157) is a surprisingly affordable way to try a foldable refurbished.

€300 to €500 — premium technology

This bracket gives you access to recent flagships: iPhone 14 Pro (€350) with Dynamic Island and 48MP camera, iPhone 15 (€411) with USB-C, or Galaxy S24 Ultra (€544) with Galaxy AI and S Pen. Phones that cost €900-1,200 new, for half the price.

How to choose a refurbished smartphone

Before buying a refurbished smartphone, check these 5 points:

  1. Warranty — minimum 12 months. At iOutlet: 24 months.
  2. Grade — Grade A (like new), B (very good) or C (good). All work the same way.
  3. Battery — check that battery health is indicated (tested with specialised technical software).
  4. Carrier unlocking — confirm it is unlocked for any carrier.
  5. Return policy — 14 days to return is standard. Be wary of anyone who does not offer it.

Tip: there is no point paying more for Grade A if you are going to use a case. Grade C has the same performance and saves up to 20%.

Frequently asked questions about refurbished smartphones

Are refurbished smartphones good?

Yes. Each unit goes through more than 30 technical tests: screen, cameras, battery, sensors, GPS and connectivity. Grade A has no visible marks. Grade B has minimal marks visible from 30 cm. Grade C has visible marks. Performance is identical across all three grades.

How much does a refurbished smartphone cost?

At iOutlet, prices start at €81 for iPhones, €129 for Samsung Galaxy and €35 for Google Pixel. On average, a refurbished smartphone costs 30% to 60% less than the new price.

Do refurbished smartphones come with a warranty?

The legal minimum warranty for refurbished smartphones varies across the EU but is at least 1 year in most countries. iOutlet extends this to 24 months on every device in stock. The warranty covers hardware defects. In parallel, all customers have 14 days to return without justification from the delivery date.

What is the difference between refurbished and second-hand?

A refurbished device is professionally tested, classified by grade, sold with warranty and invoice by a company. A second-hand device (private sale, classifieds) is sold as-is, without tests, without warranty and without recourse if problems arise.

Does the refurbished smartphone work with any carrier?

Yes. All smartphones at iOutlet are unlocked and work with any European carrier — MEO, NOS, Vodafone Portugal, Movistar, Orange, EE, O2 or any other.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. With Klarna or Floa you can split payment into 3 or 4 interest-free instalments. We also accept bank transfer, MBWay and credit/debit card.

Do you ship across the EU?

Yes. Free shipping to mainland Portugal in 3-5 working days. Other EU countries with shipping cost from €15 and delivery in 5-8 days. We also ship to the Azores and Madeira.

Can I get an invoice with a company VAT number?

Yes. During checkout you can enter your company VAT number and the invoice is issued automatically with those details. iOutlet issues invoices valid across the EU for businesses with a valid VAT number. For volumes over 5 units there is a dedicated B2B condition — contact [email protected].

How do I know the phone is not stolen?

All phones come with documented IMEI verified against GSMA's CheckMEND database. This database includes theft block records from over 50 European carriers. iOutlet does not accept stock that fails this check.

Does the phone come with Apple ID or Google account locked?

No. Step 4 of the refurbishment process is the certified Blancco erasure, which removes any prior ID. The phone is delivered ready to set up with the customer's new account. If you receive a locked device, iOutlet replaces or refunds within the first 14 days.

What is the VAT margin scheme and how does it affect the price?

The VAT margin scheme is the tax regime applied to second-hand goods, including refurbished devices. Instead of applying full VAT on the total price, VAT is charged only on the seller's margin. The result is a lower final price. On the invoice it appears as "Special scheme for second-hand goods".

Refurbished smartphone market in 2026

Buying refurbished is no longer niche — it is a mainstream choice:

  • In 2024 more than 320 million refurbished smartphones were sold globally, with Apple holding the lead in the segment (Mordor Intelligence, 2024).
  • The market grew 12.5% in 2024, reaching $67.84 billion globally.
  • Apple supports iPhones with iOS updates for 5 to 6 years after launch, plus 2 years of security patches (Macworld, 2026).
  • The carbon footprint of manufacturing a new smartphone sits between 56 and 74 kg of CO2, and refurbishing avoids roughly 80% of those emissions (Apple Environmental Progress Report, 2024).
