Frequently asked questions
Why does WhatsApp ruin photo quality?
WhatsApp automatically recompresses everything you send, to save data for whoever receives it — even if the original photo is large, it shrinks the size before delivering it, and that recompression is where most of the loss of sharpness happens. If you start from a version that's already small and optimised instead of the heavy photo straight out of the camera, WhatsApp has less work to do and the final result in the chat stays visibly closer to the original. That's why reducing before you send usually gives sharper photos than sending the original file directly.
What size will the photos be?
This preset automatically adjusts each photo to around 1 MB and a maximum of 1280px in width or height — the balance between a quick upload, with no waiting or extra data use, and an image that's still sharp on a phone screen or in a WhatsApp group. You don't pick the level manually like in the general Compress image tool, because this preset is already tuned specifically for this use; if you need more control, with different levels and no fixed dimension cap, use Compress image instead of this shortcut.
Do the photos leave my phone?
No. All the processing happens inside your own browser, on the device where you opened the page — nothing is sent to our servers or anywhere else before you reduce the size. The result is always a new, lighter file, which you download directly; the original photo stays untouched. It works the same way on an Android phone, an iPhone or a computer, and it accepts HEIC photos taken straight from an iPhone without you needing to convert them separately first.
