Frequently asked questions

How much can I reduce without ruining the photo?
It depends on the compression level you pick. For normal photos, 1 MB keeps good visible quality to the naked eye; below 300 KB, artefacts start to show on highly detailed images (text, fine patterns, gradient skies). The tool has 3 levels: Low (more quality, less reduction), Recommended (the right balance for most photos), and Extreme (the smallest file possible). Since everything happens in your browser, you can try all 3 levels on the same photo and compare the result before deciding which one to download, with nothing re-uploaded.
Which formats can I compress?
JPG, PNG and WebP — the result always keeps the file's original format. HEIC or HEIF photos (the format the iPhone uses by default) are also accepted: they're automatically converted to JPG before compressing, because that's the format guaranteed to open on any device or site you're posting the photo to. If you need to choose the output format yourself instead of letting the tool decide, use the Image Converter, which also handles TIFF, SVG and PSD.
Is it any good for sending by email?
Yes — it's one of the most common uses for this tool. Most email services cap attachments at 10–25 MB in total, and a single photo from a modern phone already runs several MB, which eats through that limit fast. Compressing before you attach fixes it: at the Recommended level, the file typically comes out at a quarter to half the original size, with no visible loss of quality. If you need to send several photos at once, process them all here and download the result as a single zip, ready to attach.
