Frequently asked questions
When should I convert PNG to JPG?
It makes sense when the PNG is heavy and you don't need transparency — for example, a screenshot or a photo saved as PNG that you're only going to publish or send by email. With good compression quality, the JPG usually comes out at a fraction of the size of the equivalent PNG, which speeds up page loading and saves storage space. If the image has transparent areas or is a logo with fine text, it's better to keep the PNG — the conversion trades a smaller file for losing those two things.
Will I lose quality?
Yes, a little — JPG uses lossy compression, while PNG loses nothing. On normal photos (landscapes, portraits, products) the difference is usually impossible to spot with the naked eye at good compression quality. On images with sharp text, icons or solid colour areas, JPG can introduce a slight blur around edges that PNG doesn't have — in those cases, keeping the PNG or choosing WebP is usually the better option.
Does transparency stay intact?
No. The JPG format doesn't support transparency, so any transparent area of the original PNG gets a solid background, usually white, once converted. If you need to keep transparency intact — for a logo that goes over different coloured backgrounds, for example — don't convert to JPG: keep the PNG, or use the Image Converter to choose WebP instead, which also supports transparency and is usually lighter than PNG.
