Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open WebP files?
WebP is a newer, lighter format than JPG or PNG at similar quality, but not all software recognises it — printers, some older image editors and certain platforms still only accept JPG or PNG. If you received or downloaded a WebP image and a program refuses to open it, converting to JPG fixes the incompatibility straight away, with no need to install an extra plugin or codec.
Do I lose quality?
There's some loss, because JPG also compresses with loss, but in practice it's usually barely noticeable on normal photos. If the WebP image has transparency, that transparency disappears when converting to JPG, which doesn't support it — in that specific case, convert to PNG instead, which keeps the transparency even though it loses WebP's lightness.
Are the images sent to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely inside your browser, on your own device — the files never leave it or pass through our servers. You always download a new file; the original WebP stays untouched. It works on any phone or computer with a current browser, with no account and no software to install.
