Frequently asked questions

Why should I use WebP on my site?
WebP usually comes out visibly lighter than a JPG or PNG of similar quality, which means faster-loading pages — a factor that both improves the experience for visitors and counts for SEO, since loading speed influences Google rankings. Unlike JPG, WebP also supports transparency, so it can replace both photos and graphics with a transparent background in most cases.
Do all browsers open WebP?
Yes, every modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) displays WebP images with no extra plugin, and that's been true for several years now. The only scenario where problems can occur is outdated software — some older image editors or local file viewers still don't recognise it. If you need maximum compatibility with that kind of software, convert to JPG instead.
Are the images sent to a server?
No. All the processing runs inside your own browser — the images never leave your device or pass through our servers, before or after the conversion. The result is always a new file that you download directly; the original stays untouched. It works the same way on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install and no account needed.
