128, 256 or 512 GB: how much storage do you need?

Start with the space used on your current phone. The right capacity depends on what you store and how long you want to keep the device. 256 GB may give more room, but it is not a necessity for everyone.

First see how much space you use

On iPhone, open Settings, General and iPhone Storage. On Android, look for Storage in Settings; the path varies by brand. Observe the total used and the apps that consume the most space. Include music downloads, maps, series and WhatsApp files.

Not all of the advertised capacity is available: the system and apps also take up space. Leave room for updates and temporary files. If your old phone is always full, choosing the same capacity again means changing how you store files.

What capacity makes sense for each use?

Capacity Makes sense when Main consideration
128 GB You use messages, browsing and a moderate set of apps; you transfer photos regularly and make few large downloads. Large games, video and offline libraries may require frequent space management.
256 GB You want to keep more photos, several games and some video, with fewer clean-ups over time. It remains necessary to make backups and review unnecessary files.
512 GB You record a lot of video, keep large work files or need an extensive offline library. The extra capacity only pays off if you use it; it does not by itself improve camera quality.

This is a buying guide, not a performance measurement. File size varies with app, resolution, format and duration. Therefore, a fixed number of photos per capacity would be misleading.

Does cloud storage replace phone storage?

It can reduce the space used by some libraries, but it does not physically increase the device's capacity. Some apps and files need local space. Also consider subscription cost, internet connection and what you need when offline.

Sync and backup are not the same: deleting a photo in a synced library may delete it on other devices. Check settings before freeing space and keep a separate copy of important files.

Storage is not RAM

The GB used to store photos are different from the working memory of apps. More storage does not guarantee the device has more RAM. Compare the two separately and read the RAM guide if you are choosing a computer.

How to decide between two offers

  1. Note the space used today.
  2. Identify what is growing: video, games, photos or professional files.
  3. Decide what you want to keep offline and what you can archive.
  4. Compare the same model, grade and condition at different capacities.
  5. Check the current price difference in the available offers.

A higher capacity may be a good buy if it avoids running out of space during expected use. If your files fit comfortably and hardly grow, you may prioritise a model with better software support. Consult the iPhones, the Samsung and the updates guide.
