1. Warning signs
Be wary if:
- The phone asks for the Apple account (iCloud) or the Google account of the previous owner after a reset, and they "don’t remember" the password.
- The seller is in a hurry, avoids meeting in person, or won’t let you turn it on and test the device in front of you.
- The price is far too good for the phone’s condition.
- There’s no receipt or proof of purchase.

2. How to check yourself before paying
Test the account lock: ask to do a factory reset in front of you and set the phone up from scratch. If midway through the process it asks for the previous owner’s Apple or Google account, it’s locked. Don’t pay.

3. And if I’m the owner and I’ve locked myself out?
It happens. You have an official, free route, and only that is the correct path:
- iPhone / iPad: log in with your Apple ID; if you’ve forgotten the password, recover it via the official Apple account; if it remains locked, contact the Apple Support with proof of purchase.
- Android: sign in with the Google account that was on the device; without access, use the Google account recovery.
Avoid "unlock tools" and iCloud or Google bypasses that appear in ads. Many are scams and leave the phone half‑functional, without calls or data. Circumventing the lock is what a thief would do. The right way goes always through the official account.

What is Activation Lock?
It’s Apple’s anti‑theft protection. It links the iPhone to the owner’s Apple account. Without that account (and its password), the device cannot be set up or used by anyone else.
Can I unlock an iPhone tied to someone else’s account?
Not by legitimate means, and that’s a good thing. Only the original owner, with the Apple account or proof of purchase via Apple Support, can remove the lock. A phone you can’t unlock this way is a clear signal not to buy.
Does Android have similar protection?
