The next-generation iPhone SE with Apple's own 5G modem is confirmed for launch at the end of the first quarter next year, according to Barclays analyst Tom O'Malley and his colleagues, who recently travelled to Asia to meet with various electronics manufacturers and suppliers. This new fourth-generation iPhone SE is expected to feature a design similar to the base iPhone 14, including a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, the latest A-series chip, a USB-C port, a 48-megapixel rear camera, 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence, and the aforementioned Apple 5G modem.
Apple has been the subject of rumours about developing its own 5G modem for iPhones since 2018, and whilst extending its 5G modem supply agreement with Qualcomm until 2026, it still has time to complete the transition to its own modem. Besides the fourth-generation iPhone SE, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already mentioned that the so-called "iPhone 17 Air" will also feature an Apple 5G modem.
Apple's first 5G modem could bring benefits to consumers in terms of speed, although it remains unclear whether it will outperform Qualcomm modems in that respect. In 2017, Apple sued Qualcomm over anti-competitive practices and failure to pay financial incentives, a case that was settled in 2019. That same year, Apple acquired the majority of Intel's smartphone modem business, strengthening its portfolio of patents related to cellular communications.
The announcement of the third-generation iPhone SE took place during an online event in March 2022, featuring a design similar to the iPhone 8, with outdated features such as Touch ID, Lightning port, and thick bezels around the display. The current iPhone SE model has a starting price of $429 in the USA, but the new model may see a slight price increase.
