Apple Makes First iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 Betas Available to Public Testers

The first look at the software features released since the Worldwide Developers Conference in June Apple has today made the first betas of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 available to its public testers. This is the first time the new software is being made available to the general public since the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. So far, Apple has provided three betas for developers, and the first public beta includes the same content as the third developer beta.

How to Access the New Betas

Public testers who have enrolled in Apple's beta testing programme can download the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates in the Settings app by navigating to General and accessing the Software Update section and selecting the iOS 18 Public Beta option. It should be noted that beta versions may present some bugs, battery issues and other complications, so it is advisable to install the software on a secondary device or create a backup in case you need to revert to iOS 17.

Main Features of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence – AI resources deeply integrated into the operating system. Although not all features are available at this time, the Writing Tools stand out for rewriting, polishing, reviewing and summarising text across all applications, as well as the ability to generate custom images with the Image Playground feature. There are also new customised emoji through the Genmoji feature, and Siri is being completely redesigned. It should be noted that Apple Intelligence is not yet active in beta versions.

Changes to the Home Screen and Control Centre

In addition to the AI features (which will be limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and M-series iPads – the most recent models), iOS 18 brings a redesign of the Home Screen, with the ability to reorganise application icons and widgets with open spaces, as well as a new option for darker tones and colours for Dark Mode. The Control Centre has been revised and it is now possible to choose what to display in the foreground from the new Controls Gallery. There are multiple pages where you can group related controls, and you can customise the sizes. As part of this update, the Flashlight and Camera icons on the Lock Screen can be swapped, and it is also possible to choose Control Centre options for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ action button.

News in the Messages App and Safari

The Messages app now allows you to schedule texts, use emoji of your choice for the Tapback function and send messages via satellite. Furthermore, text effects are now supported on any word, phrase or emoji, as well as bold and italic formatting.
