Apple and Sony are working together to bring support for the PlayStation VR2 hand controllers to the Vision Pro, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says the partnership has been in development for several months and would introduce Sony's VR controllers as an optional accessory for Vision Pro users. Gurman notes that PS5 and Xbox controllers are already supported by the Vision Pro, but are not optimised for virtual reality experiences as they lack the six degrees of freedom needed for precise VR game controls.
Given that Sony's VR2 controllers currently come with the PlayStation VR2 headset, Sony would need to start selling them as separate accessories, and this would likely happen through Apple's physical and online stores.
Beyond gaming, the controllers could improve productivity and media editing tasks on visionOS, says Gurman. This would let users navigate the operating system using the controller's analogue stick and directional pad for scrolling, while the trigger button could replace the finger pinch gesture for selection.
The announcement date remains uncertain, and the companies have already postponed their originally planned unveiling. The partnership comes at a time when Apple is facing challenges with Vision Pro adoption, with Gurman reporting that fewer than 500.000 units have been sold since its launch in February, according to his sources.
